The TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes is JDRF’s primary  fundraising event and is the fastest growing Walk in the world.  Each year more than 45,000 people across Canada Walk to cure diabetes – including representatives from more than 600 large corporations, local companies and families.  Walkers raise funds by asking friends, relatives, co-workers and suppliers to pledge them for participating in the Walk.

It is only through successful fundraising events like the Walk that JDRF is able to support the leading edge diabetes research that is taking place and is bringing us closer than ever to a cure.

It’s all about Teamwork!  If you or someone you know would like to become a Team Captain and lead the way to a cure, please contact us.  We are looking forward to working with Team Captains, families and the many volunteers, especially in our Community Walk sites that make the TELUS Walk to Cure Diabetes the great success that it is.

For more information about getting a team together or to volunteer for the TELUS Walk Committee, please call (306) 543-5451 or e-mail regina@jdrf.ca.

Honorary Provincial Walk Ambassador
John Chick, member of Indianapolis Colts, NFL and former star player with  Saskatchewan Roughriders

My name is John Chick and I am 26 years old.  I am a professional football player and I have Type 1 Diabetes. After months of symptoms, I was diagnosed during my basketball season when I was 14 years old. From this point on my life was never the same.  I had to consistently control my diet, monitor my blood sugar, and took several insulin shots per day.  This process was something that was different everyday depending on the activities that I was doing and the season that I was in.  Every year was different as I was growing up because of the different hormones and all of the changes that the body undergoes. While I was in college, I was introduced to the insulin pump.

Due to the lack of control that I felt I had while trying to juggle school, football, insulin shots, and overall life, I went on the pump.  This has helped me tremendously with having more control in my life.  It is still not perfect and I am not sure if I can remember what it is like living without diabetes.  I know with the help of JDRF and the money they raise we can find a cure.  I look forward to that day. I can’t wait!

Jerrod Schafer – Mayor Swift Current Honorary Ambassador
My name is Jerrod Schafer. Thankfully I do not have diabetes. My sister had diabetes when she was 11 years old, I grew up watching her life interrupted for blood tests, injections and diet monitoring. I also witnessed the worries and concerns of my parents along with teachers and friends about her health and well being and their efforts to ensure she led a life like everybody else.

Today, I see those same impacts in the lives of families with diabetic children. The kids’ share the same frustrations as my sister and the parents have the same worries and life changes as they help their children monitor the disease. Coaching initiation hockey this winter, I am so lucky to have two great kids with diabetes on my team, Aidan and Zachary. It is inspiring to watch their families help them lead a normal life and the dedication of the kids to let nothing stand in their way from being kids and having fun! It is my honor to help out in anyway, so that we see a cure for diabetes and end the worries and frustrations for everyone!

Co-Youth Ambassador
As a national medal winning Special Olympic athlete living and working with insulin dependent diabetes Kate’s life is all about diet and exercise. “You have to work hard everyday to be the best that you can be. You have to do it right everytime so even if you forget, you still do it right.”

Taylor, age 18 – diagnosed age 17
Co-Youth Ambassador
When there is a cure for diabetes, I will be relieved beyond words. My day-to-day living will no longer be filled with constant blood checks and needles. Instead, I can eat the foods I want without having to worry about how it will affect my blood sugars. I will also be relieved because I will never have to worry about having my blood sugar too high to low for hockey.

Brody, Age 17 – diagnosed age 6
Co-Youth Ambassador
Having diabetes as a young child was tough and as you grow older it slowly gets better. If there is a cure it will make life so much better for a lot of people. Growing up, I did not let the fact that I had this disease drag me down. I still participated in everything other kids did. Diabetes is just something you must deal with. You must stay physically active and eat well to remain as healthy as possible.

I am now 11 years old and in grade 6. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3. My parents thought I had the flu so they gave me lots of apple juice to keep me hydrated. I was very thirsty, went to the bathroom alot and lost alot of weight just overnight. My sugar levels were at a 33.0 because of all the sugar in the apple juice.  I was in intensive care for 3 days.  The dr.'s said I was close to going into ketoacidosis which is a coma.  I was in the hospital for 11 days before we were able to go home.

I adjusted well at a very young age and did my finger pokes by myself when I was 4 years old. However everyday revolves around my diabetes by eatting, doing fingerpokes, injecting insulin with a needle and doing more fingerpokes.  I have a very active lifestyle which helps to keep my sugar levels at good numbers and keeps my body healthy.  The sports I love are hockey, bowling, softball, swimming, dancing and riding my bike.  I love going to the kids Diabetes camp where I can relate to other kids who have the same disease as I do.  It makes me feel like I'm not alone.  Please help me and all the other children who have this disease by raising money to help find a cure!!!!!!!

I'm 19 years old and currently attend Western College of Remedial Massage Therapies. I was diagnosed at age 18 with type 1 diabetes in April of 2009. During the past year, I have had to struggle to change my entire lifestyle and eating habits in order to battle this disease. It has been difficult to get my blood sugars regulated, but my passion for better health and with support and a cause to find a cure, I strive to overcome diabetes.

Thomas became quite ill and was admitted to the hospital last year, where he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of nine, 1 week before his tenth birthday. Thomas was familiar with diabetes because his grandmother is also type 1 diabetic. Thomas doesn't mind the daily injections and testing, but dislikes his dietary restrictions. I live on a farm near Fulda, SK with my parents Kevin and Susan and my sister Kaitlyn. I am 12 years old and a Grade 7 student at St. Augustine School in Humboldt. I am involved with the SRC as the Grade 7 Room Representative. I also play volleyball and basketball with my school team. In the summer time I enjoy speed swimming with the Humboldt Legion Swim Team and in the winter I love to figure skate with Skate Humboldt. I have been skating for six years and enjoy attending regional competitions where I have won various medals. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes two years ago. I had to learn to test my blood sugars and learn to give myself insulin. I had the help of a fantastic team at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon. My Mom and I have worked hard to figure out what I can eat and when I can eat, so I don’t miss out on very much. I have to be careful to monitor my blood sugars with all my activities. As long as I eat properly, I can continue to do everything I love to do! Every day and every new activity affects my blood sugars. Every day is a new day and with the help from the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation I hope that during my life time a cure can be found for diabetes.

Dylan, Co-Youth Ambassador
February 2, 2007, my life changed.  I was diagnosed with diabetes.  I had to spend 6 days in the hospital to get my blood sugar levels back to normal; normal being between 4 and 8 – mine was 39.  There was a lot to learn; blood sugar testing (finger pokes), carb counting, and insulin injections.

My diet was very restricted; I had to eat at certain times of the day and certain amounts of carbs at a time even if I really did not feel like it.  I had to do 6 blood sugar tests a day and 3 injections and no more sleeping in.  For a teenager – not a good thing.  This was a very difficult and drastic change to my life.

For the last 2 years I have been on a different type of insulin that gives me a little more flexibility.  I can eat when I’m hungry and the amount that I feel I need.  It means more testing and more needles – but more freedom.

I look forward to the day that there is a cure for my diabetes.  I know that with all the research that JDRF does - a cure it not far behind.  Please help support the JDRF and walk with me and my family to help find a cure for diabetes.

Dante, Youth Ambassador
I am 11 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 4. Everyday I have to check my blood sugar levels and have up to 6 needles a day, in august of 2007 I got the insulin pump  and it has made my life a bit easier by eliminating the needles to just once every 3 days. I constantly have to count carbohydrates and watch what I eat and how much, as well as make sure I am active. I play football, baseball, volleyball and basketball and must eat extra food when doing activities to keep my blood sugar levels normal. Please join me in raising awareness about type 1 diabetes , and raising money to fund the research to find a cure.

Have you ever thought of doing a SCHOOL WALK PROGRAM IN YOU COMMUNITY?

JDRF has an electronic school walk guide that outlines the simple procedures on how to plan and implement a School Walk. A JDRF Parent volunteer can take this guide and conduct a School Walk program.  JDRF is responsible for counting/depositing all pledge money collected and provides a great prize incentive program.  A great way for children to be educated on Type 1 Diabetes along with having fun in raising funds for JDRF.

The School Walk can be done at any time of the year – at lunch, recess or after school etc.  A great way to improve healthy lifestyles with our children.

If you are interested please contact Randy in Regina at regina@jdrf.ca or phone (306) 543-5451
